Topic: ESRI's prediction of growth in 2011

Panellists: Joe Durkan (UCD Economist), Michael Taft (Economist, UNITE), Joan Burton (Labour), Tom O’Connor (Economist, Cork Institute of Technology)

The rich and wealthy are given a two headed coin: they either make millions or the tax payer picks up their bill. If you put money on a horse to win and it loses the bookies don’t give you your money back. Will we be let know who is looking for NAMA money and how much?

Vincent you wont get the pathetic Labour Party to say anything meaningful on this crisis. Look how Jack O'Connor, Labour Party executive member, bailed out Fianna Fail again today. It’s quite sad really. Workers should reject pay deal and throw FF out, but unfortunately they'll be replaced by those who can’t answer a simple question.

How can Brian Lenihan say we are turning the corner when we are deep in debt - on what planet is he living.

Vincent - Please wish Liam Cosgrave - former Taoiseach - a happy 90th birthday today - an honorable position from another era - Many thanks

Is it too simplistic to suggest that when the government guarantee expires in September that the government ceases to support Anglo and Nationwide?

Joe Heffernan

Joan Burton seems to have a good understanding of the financial ramifications for the ordinary people but where are the salary cuts at government level?

***

What if mortgage holders with-held their payments & gave themselves a mortgage NAMA?

Pauline. Kildare

If we reduce no. of TD's by half to 83, we save €50m, come into line with EU average and get added value for taxpayers' money.

Denis, Limerick

How does consumer spending return to normal when the income of consumers is being decimated. The ESRI 'forecast' resembles meandering astrology and is just about as useful!

Kellier

***

This is far worse than the eighties. We have been sold down the river by Haughey Bertie and Biffo.

Samantha Rawson, Dublin

The true unemployment figure is already at least 20%. The figures used by government don’t include the out of work self-employed or those on FAS schemes.

Brian, Walkinstown

Why don't we opt out of the Euro and bring back the Punt?

Vincent, when will the Government realise, that if they continue to hit the Public Sector, the biggest loser of all will be the General Public they serve! Teachers will cut out lunchtime and after school activites and study! Gardai wont respond to calls with haste! Prison Officers will also work to rule, as will Nurses, Gaelic Football and Hurling Championship matches in June postponed until July to avoid any clashes with the FIFA World Cup in South Africa? My how things have changed! The GPA should feel confident ahead of next weekends conference, HQ are in a real liberal mood nowadays!

I reckon every man, woman and child in the country is now in hock to the tune of Euro 11,800. Thank you Brian Cowan!

Vincent does the government think we are all fools? If we reject the Croke Park deal then the government will take another 8% from our pay, then this will bring Ireland to an all out strike.

***

How people hang onto what they have in recession’. Big boys big houses! Equality? Middle class aristocracy! It aint just the pretty elephants and polar bears under threat, the common garden slug is also! Tree's in bursting leaf? Green capitalism high tech or not is a contradiction in terms. Same old same old paradigm: white Eurocentric US civilized economic eugenics. Columbian legacy.

Our government projections are typically miles out, we need to forget about bond markets and react now and not later and invest in future employment and stop protecting those that have contributed to our countries crippling debts.

Patrick, Dublin.

Don’t forget today’s other revelation that many of the transfers to NAMA are now known not to be paying interest never mind capital. And of course nobody is accountable.

Sean

***

The ERSI get most of their income from commissioned research and corporate sponsorship, so it’s hardly surprising that their views are always skewed in favour of employers and big business. They aren’t independent in their views so why do their views get such publicity.

Gabriel, Leitrim

***

The ESRI say that things are improving slightly but there will be no new jobs and wages will fall. What idiot could believe that is an improvement?

John, Limerick

How did all the governments in the world not expect this depression how did they get it so wrong we are being robbed now this has all been planned please speak the truth.
