Closure of post office will hit elderly

The closure of the post office in Ballynanty, adjacent to the huge estate of Moyross in the north side of Limerick, will impose considerable hardship on elderly people in the area.

The post office has provided a vital community service for the past 50 years. We are now told that the office is to re-locate to new premises at the Watch House Cross at the entrance to the Moyross estate.

This new venue is a considerable distance from Ballynanty, and it will be opposed by local residents.  In fact, Republican Sinn Fein Northside is launching a petition to save the Ballynanty post office.

The fact is that the post office is vital for many of Ballynanty's elderly residents who are dependent on allowances and benefits paid through the outlet.

Many elderly and infirm people and pensioners will have to make the long journey to the new location, and it may well involve them in extra expense in order to use the services provided by the post office.

We feel that this move is a retrograde step, and we are now going to launch a petition to keep the Ballynanty post office open in its present location.
