Myers and the immigration debate
Kevin Myers wrote in The Irish Independent on Tuesday, 9 October, of how out of “patriotic” duty he had gone on the Late Late Show to institute a national debate on immigration. To his bewilderment, the nation failed to respond to his exhortation. He wrote how he had “seen off” people in the Late Late Show audience, who had attempted to question his assertions on immigration and the calamity it is about to cause us. In fact he did no such thing as “see off” the two “intruders” in the discussion. Having limply called for a “debate” (the ready resort of a protagonist who knows the substance of his contention is suspect), he immediately refused to allow a debate and rudely cut off two people who had challenged him, reffusing to partake in the very process he was urging. PS If there is an immigration problem, then, clearly, the problem arises it the first instance with the foreign nationals who comprise most immigrants. As we report else in this issue of Village, they come from the UK. Kevin Myers is one of these.
