Chronicle of carnage

We list 111 of the 125 people who have died on the roads so far in 2006, including the 20 non-nationals who have died

One hundred and twenty five people have been killed on Irish roads so far in 2006 (this figure applies up to 18 April). Of these, 20 people have been non-nationals. Nineteen of the non-nationals have been from eastern Europe and one was from Nigeria.

Ten of the 20 non-nationals who have been killed on the roads so far in 2006 died in two multiple-death collisions. On Good Friday (16 April) four Polish men were killed in a collision with a truck outside Cork. On 18 February, outside Buncrana, one Lithuanian man and four Latvians died when the car in which they were travelling, driven by the Lithuanian man, crashed into a Volkswagen Vento caring the four Latvians.

Non-nationals account for 10 per cent of the workforce and 16 per cent of those killed on the roads so far in 2006. The disproportion may be accounted by the age profile of non-nationals.

Acting CEO for the National Safety Council (NSC), Noel Brett says that one of the reasons for the high proportion of road deaths among non-nationals could be that many of the non-nationals working here are young males. Males between the ages of 18-24 are 7.7 times more likely to be involved in a fatal or serious injury, according to the NRA.

Road deaths in many of the countries that were known as Eastern Europe are higher than in Ireland. Latvia has the highest per-capita road death toll in Europe. In 2004 549 people died on the roads out of a population of 2.3 million compared with a death toll of 399 in Ireland. And 22 per cent of road fatalities in Lativia are caused by drink-driving. Lithuania had a death toll of 216 per one million population and Poland 125 in 2004. Ireland's figure is 98 per one million.

A mid-term review of EU road safety stated there had been a slight disimprovement in road death trends in Czech Republic, Latvia, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia.

The National Safety Council recently launched a road safety document in 11 languages.
