McDowell abused office

Had Sean Doherty, while Minister for Justice in 1982, used the contents of a Garda file to have a journalist driven from his employment, he and the government he served would have been driven from office in what would have been regarded as one of the worst scandals of that era. Doherty's fate and that of the then government, led by Charles Haughey, would have been even more reviled had it emerged that Doherty had leaked a document from that Garda file to a journalist and then claimed he did so to protect the institutions of the State against subversion.

Comment from Joe Higgins TD in Dáil 29 November 2005

Joe Higgins: Is the Minister struck by the nauseating double standards in many sections of the print media, especially Independent Newspapers, in their coverage of the sending of bully boys onto Irish Ferries ships? This has been reported in the most sedate language. Has the Minister contrasted that with the paroxysms of fury in Sir Anthony O'Reilly's title, the Irish Independent, when it vilified groups of workers such as those in the ESB and An Post who had to resort to some mild industrial action to defend their interests? The same title has an inglorious history in the events of 1913.
