      Cover Story
In this month's issue we have tried to unravel The Connolly Affair in as much as the subjudice rules and the natural reticence of the parties concerned allows. The full story may come out at the trial of Malcolm MacArthur, but in the meantime not only Charlie Haughey but the rest of us have to live with the political consequences of this affair.

      The IRA's 20 year war (Aug 1982)

      • 31 July 1982

The IRA's Twenty Year War, by Vincent Browne
IN THE wake of the London bombings, as in the wake of every atrocity associated with the war in the North over the past dozen years, the politicians and the media have centred their reaction around the question, "Why?" How, they ask, can people do such things? As if such events were totally divorced from the balance and condition of the forces waging the war.

      Economic crisis and political holidays
The economic disintegration continues - and the politicians have decided that this is an appropriate time to go on holiday for three months. Vincent Browne examines the likely prospects, or lack of them, for the economy, given the measures which follow inevitably from the politicians' strategies - or lack of them.

Gene Kerrigan has been taking a look at Charlie Haughey's progress towards the destiny which he, and the mythology of his party, have set for him.

Hurling: The Holy Ground Once More
FOLLOWING on from the Cork hurling team's blitz of Waterford, Kevin Cashman tries, on Page 48, to keep his county pride in check while assessing the likely prospects of the opposition and the ability of Cork to hold fast.

Paddy Agnew finally puts the World Cup back in its box for another four years with a review of the thuggery, managerial cowardice and incompetent refereeing which has brought the international tournament to a new low.

DEREK SPEIRS took his cameras to Slane and dodged bopping crowds and Mick Jagger's waterworks to bring back the excellent set of photos.

      Blackmail on Abortion (July 1982)

      • 30 June 1982

Abortion: backlash and blackmail by Pat Brennan
The manner in which the anti-abortion lobby managed to secure a commitment from the politicians on a constituutional amendment has been t quite amazing. The issue was far removed from the centre of political debate, the lobby involved was tiny and the significance of the commitment enormous. Pat Brennan, deputy editor of Magill, explores how this commitment came to be made, what its ramifications are and, most of all, how the anti-abortion lobby was formed and who the leading lights in the campaign have been.

SPORT features strongly again in this issue with Paddy Agnew reporting on the progress of the World Cup competition. Kevin Cashman writes from Cork about the hurling championship with, inevitably, special attention foocussed on the Cork team and its new stars.

KARL CRAWLEY is an unusual man. Many people have gone through experiences similar to his and have been broken by them - in body or in spirit. Karl has survived, albeit at a terrible price.

SFWP Part 2. The politics of Conspiracy (May 1982)

      • 30 April 1982

We continue with our investigation into the operations of SFWP with an insight into how the party transformed itself ideologically (page 4); the setting up of a secret wing of the party and the involvement of secret members (page 10); how the party manipulated and then destroyed a broad front organisation, the Resources Protection Campaign (page 13); the strength of the party within the ITGWU (page 15); the party's blueprint for trade union infiltration (page 18); the hard evidence on the existence of the Official IRA, of which Tomas MacGiolla and Sean Garland know nothing (page 52); and a case study of how one section of the media, RTE 's Today Tonight programme, has displayed significant bias towards the party (page 53 J.
