The killing of Eric Hopkins

On 26 May of last year gardaí killed Eric Hopkins, a 24-year-old man from Summerhill, Dublin, father of a child. Eric Hopkins was one of three robbers who entered the post office in Lusk that morning. One of his accomplices, Colm Griffin, was armed and he too was shot dead.

The Rossiter case

Brian Rossiter, a 14 year old Clonmel boy, was found in a coma after a night in Garda custody. He died three days later, never having recovered consciousness. At present an inquiry is underway into the circumstances of his detention and death.

Ireland an accessory to international criminality

At a press conference with John Howard, the Australian Prime Minister, Bertie Ahern stumbled through a justification for the use of Shannon by American military forces in its conduct of the occupation of Iraq. He said this was authorised by UN Security Council resolutions. He had a point.

Election agenda for equality

In a year's time the Irish electorate will be invited to sign up to one of a few packages of parties, candidates and policies for the following five years. McDowell's brazen hypocrisy

Michael McDowell has promised legislation to reform the libel laws since he first became Attorney General seven years ago. In spite of these serial promises, nothing has emerged so far. One of the obvious reform of the libel laws is to remove the liability of printers and distributors from libel suits. At present the common laws exempts distributors where the distributor had no way of knowing the publication they are distributing carried a libel. There is no such exemption for printers.
